This represents a unique opportunity to own an extremely rare and important iron pull toy by known manufacturer, James Fallows and Son. Bernard Barenholtz, in his book American Antique Toys 1830-1900, shows a picture and description on page 124. Jerome Park was the leading American racetrack at the time. One of these toys is owned by the New York Historical Society Museum and a description of the object from both the museum and from Barenholtz is included along with a write-up from the U.S. Patent Office. Four racehorses are shown, all with jockeys aboard, two paired in the front with two paired in the back on a blue platform with cast iron wheels. A pierced hole appears upfront for a pull string (not included). When originally issued, each horse had a rear hoof attached to a hinge and axle so that when the toy was pulled, or pushed, the horses rocked back and forth imitating a full gallop. Currently, only one of the horses remains so attached. The other three horses have detached from the hinge, but all are still present and could conceivably be reattached. All parts are original, with paint loss to the participants and the base. Embossed in the center is the patent date of August 3, 1886.
