Oversized photograph of Ted Williams, taken by noted photographer Gjon Mili, featured in the September 1, 1941, issue of LIFE magazine. The striking image features Williams dressed only in a pair of shorts as he stands ready in his batting stance. Mili's credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with the handwritten notations "Ted Williams '41 9/26." It should be noted that this piece was originally obtained from the LIFE magazine archives and is a vintage print, most likely produced in the 1940s, and very possibly at the time it was used for print in LIFE. The photo was one of a series of high-speed photographs taken by Mili in which he showed Williams' swing in its many stages, from his stance, to impact, to follow through. Mili specialized in the use of stroboscopic light and electronic flashes, which allowed him to document high-speed movements, such as a batter's swing, to great photographic effect. Williams, of course, was well on his way to hitting over .400 for the season at the time this photo was taken, and his image was also featured on the cover of the September 1, 1941, issue of LIFE. The photo (10.25x13.25"), produced on heavyweight photographic paper, displays a few light creases. Very Good to Excellent condition.
