Original glass plate negative used to produce first baseman Jake Boyd’s card in the 1887 N172 Old Judge set. Boyd is captured striking a batting pose on the field in front of the grandstand. This is one of three images of Boyd featured in the Old Judge set, all of which picture him as a member of the Chicago Maroons. The notation "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co. N.Y." is meticulously etched to the left of Boyd’s image. The etching along the base reads “Boyd – 1stB – Chic Maroons.” Old Judge negatives are scarce, and all the known examples originate from a single find in Vermont in the late 1990s. This is one of three Old Judge negatives in this auction, all of which are notable for their high quality.
