Original glass plate negative used to produce catcher Abner Boyce's card in the 1887 N172 Old Judge set. Boyce is captured in a studio setting as he strikes a crouched fielding pose in front of a base. This is one of four images of Boyce featured in the Old Judge set, all of which picture him as a member of Washington. The notation "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co. N.Y." is meticulously etched to the left of Boyce's image. Etched along the base is Boyce's name position, and team affiliation: "Boyce. C. Washington." A small piece of tape affixed to the top border bears a vintage ink notation that reads "6136 Boyce C. Washington Club." Old Judge negatives are scarce, and all the known examples originate from a single find in Vermont in the late 1990s. This is one of three Old Judge negatives in this auction, all of which are notable for their high quality. The negative (5x6") displays minor flaws along the periphery but the central image remains unaffected. VG-EX.
