Benny Leonard is either the #1 or #2 greatest lightweight of all time, depending on who you ask. He held the title from May of 1917 to January 1925 and beat a Who's Who of Hall of Fame fighters in the process. The Ghetto Wizard, considered the greatest of all Jewish champions, went on the vaudeville stage, starred in films, joined the Merchant Marines in World War II, and remained active in boxing as a referee; in fact, he suffered a fatal heart attack in 1947 while refereeing a bout. We are pleased to offer a variety of memorabilia spanning Leonard’s career starting from his earliest days as a fighter, including action and posed news photos, movie memorabilia, and large promotional items: 1917 Police Gazette cover and story; 1917 photos (2) in Army uniform; 1919 promo photo 7x11"; 1920 portrait by Bain News Service; 1921 portrait; 1922 photos (2) from Leonard-Kansas title fight; 1924 Reputable Pictures publicity photo for serial The Flying Fists; 1924 oversized lobby card from the serial The Evil Eye; 1925 studio publicity photos (2) from serial The Flying Fists; 1925 photo of Leonard and family; 1926 Acme Newspictures photo of Leonard and HOFer Tommy Gibbons; 1920s large mounted photo display; 1920s oversized photo 14x10"; 1931 publicity photo 5x7" in formal wear; 1933 Leonard sparring with HOFer Barney Ross; 1940s Leonard in the Merchant Marine with HOFers Barney Ross, Mickey Walker and Tony Canzoneri; Snapshot of Leonard and writer Hype Igoe; Benny Leonard boxing glove vending machine charm.
