Early original Type I photograph of Hall of Fame outfielder Zack Wheat as a member of the Brooklyn Superbas. The closeup image captures Wheat on the field as he stares into the camera. A “Spooner & Wells, Inc” credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with Wheat’s name and a few editorial markings. Based upon the uniform style, this photo was taken in either 1910 or 1911, making it an extremely early Zack Wheat image. Wheat made his Major League debut with Brooklyn in 1909 but only appeared in 26 games. 1910 marked his official rookie season, and he batted .284 and .287, respectively during his first two full seasons. A lifetime .317 hitter, Wheat won the National League batting title in 1918 and led Brooklyn to the pennant in both 1916 and 1920. The photo measures 6.5x4.5” and displays numerous light surface wrinkles. VG. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
