A late 1890s or early 1900s boxing cabinet card of Oscar Matthew "Battling" Nelson. Nelson, known as the "Durable Dane," had 172 documented fights in a career that lasted from 1896 until 1917. Nelson was a colorful character and was popularized in many contemporary publications. In 1911, famous cartoonist Fay King depicted Nelson in the "The Wonders of Yellowstone National Park." They quickly fell in love and married in 1913 and had a nasty public divorce in 1916 which was quite a tabloid favorite for the time. Nelson beat Gans in 1908 to win the World Lightweight Championship, finally obtaining the title he always desired. He became an International Boxing Hall of Fame member in 1998. The cabinet card measures 6.5x4.5" and was produced by Johnson in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is in FR condition with some surface wrinkling and typical age related wear and toning.
