An original 1910s Willie Purcell boxing cabinet card. Affixed on reverse is a personal letter to Richard K. Fox, editor of the Police Gazette from famed boxing promoter, trainer, and referee Louis Bauman, who also fought under the name Lou Ross. Bauman is credited to having been one of the most respected and prolific referees and was credited with officiating over 15,000 fights in the Ohio and Kentucky regions. The letter from Bauman was to introduce Purcell as a boxer to the editor of the Police Gazette and requesting that the fighter be featured in the famed publication. The card measures 8.5x6" and is in GD-VG condition with the typical age wear and rounded corners of cabinet cards of this era. The letter is GD with the upper left corner missing but the rest is clear and bold in original ink. A unique item and surely to be sought-after by boxing aficionados.
