Wonderful sterling silver plate presented to boxer Chuck Wepner to commemorate his career as well as his retirement on November 23, 1979. Ornate platter measures 12" in diameter and is engraved in the center, "Chuck Wepner - A Champion of the Millions of Boxing Fans he Thrilled During an Outstanding Career - Madison Square Garden - November 23, 1979." The Bayonne Bleeder had a solid if unspectacular career record of 35-14-2, but his most endearing feature was his ability to absorb enormous amounts of punishment while winning many of those matches. He gained international fame during his bout with Muhammad Ali, stunning the Greatest with a 9th round knockdown before Ali rebounded and pummeled the challenger until the ref stopped the bout in a 15 round TKO. Popular folklore states that this inspired the Rocky movies, though writer of the 1976 original, Sylvester Stallone, has denied that was the case. Has some tarnishing and shows wear throughout; according to the included LOA, this is a Lady Diana plate with sterling marks on the back.
