In addition to the artwork being unique, the horses shown negotiating the jump is the first known depiction of the racetrack's famous water hazard. The complete and unmarked newspaper dated June 12, 1875, showing the full front-page cover is also included.
This drawing is the actual source of the printed cover image as a result of new advances in the engraving process at the time. Formerly, drawings were transferred to wood blocks in the traditional method of wood engraving. The two bottom corners are drawn on cutouts that was the method used to correct parts of the initial drawing in which the artist was not satisfied. This drawing (16x18.25), and newspaper are in superb condition and of historical significance. A further description is provided by the prominent Philadelphia Print Shop on the back of the matted drawing.
