The indelible image of Bobby Orr captured in mid-flight immediately after scoring the overtime winner in the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals remains a snapshot of one of the most memorable moments in hockey history. This puck, beginning its journey from behind the net, passed by Derek Sanderson out front to Orr as he crossed at the top of the crease, found its mark behind a sprawling Glen Hall to bring an abrupt end to the four-game series in overtime. A thick strip of vintage white cloth tape (the style found on the blades of Pro goal sticks from the period) has been attached to the back of the puck. The statistics of the goal are printed across the tape in faded ballpoint: “Boston Bruins, Stanley Cup Champions, May 10, 1970, Bos 4 - St. L 3 OT (overtime), GWG (game winning goal) Orr, Ass. Sanderson”. The puck itself is a rubber crested, screened back official NHL Boston Bruins Converse. This style is correct for the period as the rubber octagon back gamers were used the year before and the team would switch to Viceroy pucks a few years later. From the extensive collection of long-time Boston Bruins equipment manager John “Frosty” Forrestall. The late Frosty Forrestall amassed an impressive collection of memorabilia over the years focusing, of course, on the game used equipment of Bobby Orr and his Bruins bench mates. We have been fortunate to have obtained a number of items from this collection over the past year including a number of pairs of game used Orr skates and sticks, official NHL goal pucks from 1972-74 and equipment worn by Gerry Cheevers, Phil Esposito and Mike Bossy. This historic memento will come with three letters documenting its authenticity and origin.
