This amazing collection of 16 historic images chronicles Seabiscuit's arrival and subsequent residence as a stallion at Charles Howard's Ridgewood Ranch. Each photo features a hand-signed autograph of Laura Hillenbrand, author of the 2001 No. 1 best-selling book Seabiscuit: An American Legend, which was later adapted into the 2003 Universal Pictures Academy Award nominated film. Seabiscuit’s rags-to-riches racing career captivated the nation during the Great Depression. An underdog, he defeated some of the best racehorses at the time, including 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral in “The Race of the Century.” This wonderful treasure provides a rare account of the famed C. S. Howard Stable runner’s later life at the Willits, California ranch. The array of scarce photos include everything from Seabiscuit's highly anticipated arrival following his retirement in 1940 as horse racing's all-time leading money winner, to the more intimate and pastoral moments he shared there with his handlers and owner, automobile magnate Charles Howard. Each of the crystal clear black and white 8” x 10” glossy photos are individually hand-signed in gold by the esteemed author and emanate from a fund-raising auction in November 2004 for CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome) Association of America, which Ms. Hillenbrand has avidly supported. In addition to the photo collection, this lot also includes a Ridgewood Ranch commemorative bronze horse shoe, mounted within a rustic wooden shadowbox frame made from the redwood boards removed from Seabicuit’s actual stud barn. The limited edition display is numbered #4 of only 20 total produced.
