Spectacular winner's trophy from the 1985 Monmouth Handicap, won by Kentucky Derby winner Spend A Buck. Exquisite piece is by Cartier - renowned for the highest quailty jewelry - and is one of the nicest horse racing trophies we have handled, made of gold and silver and weighing in at 73 ounces. Hand-crafted marvel includes molded horseshoes which are attached to the base and also to the top of the bowl - five shoes total, two of which are solid gold (we think at least 14 karat) - and the others are silver; the gold horseshoes are estimated to weigh about two ounces each and the rest of the trophy is solid silver. Base measures 6.5x4.5", oval bowl at top is 16x10", and the trophy stands 7.5" tall. Engraving on base reads, "The Monmouth Handicap Won By Spend A Buck Monmouth Park." Also included is a photo collage mounted on board which includes the particulars of the August 17, 1985, race, in addition to the original Cartier presentation box, which measures 19x13x11". Spend A Buck is significant in history not only for having won the Kentucky Derby, but for changing the prize structure of Triple Crown races, having passed up the '85 Preakness and Belmont to vie for a $2.6 million dollar pot offered by the owner of Garden State Park; Buck did go on to win the final race and the lucrative prize, thus forcing Triple Crown events to offer top-dollar purses.
