The ball is of a very rare style with the year 1910 stamped onto it, and written below the signature is the date, October 17, 1910, which was the day of Game 1 of that year's World Series, though Mathewson's Giants would have been spectators having finished second in the National League. Ball shows extensive use but the sweet spot autograph in black fountain pen remains surprisingly bold and clear. Christy posted a stellar 27-9 record with a minuscule 1.89 ERA in 1910, though New York finished a distant 13 games behind the pennant-winning Chicago Cubs.
