A true titan of the turf, Nijinsky II, in 1970 became the first horse in 35 years to win the English Triple Crown, a feat that has not been repeated to date. He is regarded by many experts to have been the greatest flat racehorse in Europe during the 20th century. This incredibly rare authenticated shoe, emanates from the collection of Claiborne Farm groom David Ashley and is mounted on a 8” x 10” wooden plaque with engraved brass haltertag nameplate. It was originally acquired in the summer of 1988 when blacksmith Donald Jones removed it from the noted champion and is accompanied by a COA denoting the same. During his extraordinary two-year racing career, the Canadian-bred horse produced 11 victories in 13 starts across England, Ireland and France with second-place finishes in his final two races. He earned numerous accolades, including 1970 English Horse of the Year and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Following his racing career, Nijinsky II was retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and for over 20 years was a pasture mate to the iconic American 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat. Amazingly his breeding success equalled or may have even surpassed his racing accomplishments. A son of the great Northern Dancer, Nijinsky II sired 155 stakes winners ranging over the full range of distances at which he excelled as a racehorse, and he is the only sire to have winners of the Kentucky and Epsom Derbies in the same year. His most famous progeny include: Baldski, Caerleon, Ferdinand, Gallantsky, Golden Fleece, Green Dancer, Maplejinsky, Ruby Slippers, Sky Classic and State. Nijinsky died of old age in 1992 and is buried at Claiborne Farm.
