This lovely framed limited edition watercolor print of Secretariat as a foal emanates from the personal estate of Secretariat's famed exercise rider Charlie Davis. This very special numbered edition print was personally presented to Mr. Davis during the 2013 Meadow Birthday Celebration by the artist Lynn Blount. The original painting upon which the print is based was unveiled to Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery and jockey Ron Turcotte, who also attended the celebration, and now resides in the official Secretariat Archives. The undeniably charming composition features a front view of the future Triple Crown champion with the inscription Secretariat - Foal, #3/250 and the artist's signature. The provenance of the piece is impeccable as it has been kept in protected storage since its initial receipt in 2013 and remained one of Mr. Davis's most prized possessions up until his death in 2018. It is now being offered for auction by Mr. Davis's family. The print resides within a brown hardwood frame with cream-hued double linen matting, and measures 20" x 17" in total. It is accompanied by a certificate from the artist stating: "Limited Edition print: #3. Presented to Charlie Davis in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Penny's horse, Secretariat's Triple Crown win in sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont in 1973, all at speed records that still stand today." Secretariat is considered by many to be the greatest racehorse of all time and the most recognizable name in Thoroughbred racing. The charismatic chestnut colt, owned by Penny Chenery's Meadow Stable, is best remembered for his achievements in the 1973 Triple Crown. After setting track records winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the extraordinary champion trained by Lucien Laurin and ridden by jockey Ron Turcotte, won the Belmont Stakes by an amazing 31 lengths in world record time, perhaps the single greatest racing performance ever. Retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, he sired more than 600 foals, and his descendants continue to impact the racing world today. Secretariat died in 1989, yet his legacy carries on, transcending the sport as a beloved American cultural icon to several generations of fans.
