Items capturing a dark moment in the history of the squared circle. 1) Photo of the fight in which Benny Paret fell into a coma and died in the hospital a few days later, never regaining consciousness, as he was for all intents and purposes dead in the ring. Before the fight, Paret touched Emile Griffith's buttocks and called him a slur in Cuban slang (Griffith was dogged by rumors he was bisexual). This was even more of an embarrassment for Griffith as it occurred in front of his girlfriend. Griffith trapped Paret in a corner, and repeatedly hit him in the head, inflicting the fatal blows. This is a higher quality British version vintage, but not from the original negative, and has an Associated Press stamp with a London address. It measures 8x10" and the condition is VG+. 2) Also, 1966 pen & ink original art by Alan Maver, as Griffith had just become the third Welterweight Champ to win the middleweight crown (10.5x7").
