Ornate and magnificent, first is a gold-filled 1st place winner's medal from a 5-mile cycling race in 1892 won by W.S. Cummings, along with a 1st place winner's medal for a 1-mile cycling race for the same year. The 1890s are considered the "Golden Age of Cycling" as large organized races became very popular throughout the western world and beyond. At one time, almost every major city in America had a velodrome for track racing events. This is why the Tour De France, which began in 1903 and continues to this day, is one of the most anticipated and attended sporting events in the world. Both medals have intricate scrolling and imagery in gold of cyclists and handlebars; one is three- and the other is two-tiered. Incised on the verso is JOHN HARRIOTT-BOSTON" who is the goldsmith who created the pieces for this decorated event. Condition is EX, from the Helms Museum collection.
