In this race, Dr. Fager set a race record in the Withers, carrying an assigned weight of 134 lbs. in 1:33 4/5, the fastest time in the history of the race up to that point. Baeza, who signed two photos that are included in this lot, said he could have had Dr. Fager go faster, but knew he was far in front of the rest of the field and didn't want to tax the horse unnecessarily. He authored one of the greatest racing years a horse has ever had as, in 1968, Dr. Fager earned four titles, collecting a string of successes. Leading up to that phenomenal year, he took home the top prize in the Withers Stakes in New York, for which he earned this 10"-wide ceremonial tray. It is engraved; "NEW YORK RACING ASSOCIATION THE WITHERS AQUEDUCT 1967 WON BY TARTAN STABLE'S DR. FAGER JOCKEY: BRAULIO BAEZA."
