Displayed is a multi-signed album page with a signature and inscription by former World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson along with the signatures of baseball players Elden Auker and Cy Perkins. This album page comes from an album of autographs that originated from a Boston Red Sox batboy. Jack Johnson, known as the "Galveston Giant," was the first African American World Heavyweight Champion. Jailed with veteran boxer Joe Choynski in 1901 after a fight between them that was at that time illegal, Johnson was mentored by Choynski, who taught Johnson many of boxing's fine points. Johnson had much success, and in 1908 he challenged World Heavyweight Champion James Jeffries, who refused to fight Johnson. The Coloured [sic] World Heavyweight Champion won the World Heavyweight title in 1910, defeating Tommy Buns. Johnson lost his World Heavyweight crown to Jess Williard in 1915. Johnson dated and married white women, which was very unusual in his era, and he was subjected to racial prejudice because of his interracial marriages. After his reign as the World Heavyweight Champion, he fought until he was 60 years old, and died because of an auto accident in 1946.
Elden "Submarine" Auker was an American League pitcher with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and St. Louis Browns, and he played in the Major Leagues from 1933-42, with a career record of 133-102 and a 4.42 ERA. His "Submarine" nickname came from his underhanded style of pitching. When he passed away at age 95 in 2006, he was the last surviving member of the 1935 World Champion Detroit Tigers. Cy Perkins was a catcher who played in the American League: Philadelphia Athletics (1915 & 1917-30), New York Yankees (1931), Detroit Tigers (1934). He batted a career .269. Perkins also managed the Detroit Tigers for 15 games during the 1934 season.
The autograph page measures approx. 4.3x6". Seven small holes are on the page so that it may be held in a spiral autograph album. Using blank, fountain ink, Johnson signed the album page in neat, bold script, as usual attaching the end of his first name to the beginning of a last name, writing on one plane, and adding his frequently used inscription "Former Champion." Also signing in black fountain ink were Auker and Perkins. The three signatures average about 8/10. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified "AUTHENTIC AUTO" (85541976). The offered album page exhibits a very small "2" in black ink written by an unknown hand. The album page shows some darkening and a very small smudge, but the page is in overall very good condition. This same Lelands' Auction features other pages featuring autographs of notable athletes.
