A century ago, the 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates, led by an exciting trio of Hall of Famers, became World Champions. Offered is the chance to possess an appropriate remembrance of this great club - a jumbo pencil that shows the 1925 Pittsburgh home schedule. The '25 Pirates were managed by Hall of Famer Bill McKechnie, and the team played at Forbes Field. These Pirates took no prisoners as the buccaneers finished in first place in the National League with a 98-58 record. Hall of Fame third baseman Pie Traynor batted .320; Hall of Fame outfielder Kiki Cuyler batted .357 and led the NL in triples with 26; Hall of Fame Outfielder Max Carey batted .343 and led the NL in steals with 46. In the '25 World Series, the Pirates defeated the Washington Senators in seven games.
The offered, unused wooden pencil is 7.75" long, and it has a thickness of 0.375" and a large eraser. Machine printed in black on the brown pencil: "FIRST NATIONAL BANK/HOMESTEAD, PA/PIRATES AT HOME..." What follows is the complete Pirates home schedule, but done, probably to save space, by opponent teams. Thus, as an example, printed is, "Chicago: April 22, 23, 24, 25. May 25, 26, 27. Sept. 7, 7, 8, 9." The foregoing was the format followed for each of the other six visiting NL teams at that time. The sponsoring Homestead First National Bank was in Homestead, PA, just across the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh, and the long-term home of the Homestead Grays, a team in the Negro National League that in the 1920s also played many home games at Forbes Field and featured Hall of Famers Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard. The pencil remains unsharpened. The offering has a few very small dings, scrapes or other tiny spots, but the very minor imperfections do not impair its nice eye appeal. This vintage, jumbo pencil is in overall very good condition, especially so when its 100 years of age is taken into account.
