*** FAILED PSA

Displayed is an Oct. 3, 1938, World's Fair Joe DiMaggio large (16x19.9"), formal black & white photo, signed by baseball's first agent, Christie Walsh, and gifted to Hall of Fame New York Yankee manager Joe McCarthy. The '38 Yankees won the American League pennant with a 99-53-5 record and swept the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. Babe Ruth was now a coach with the Brooklyn Dodgers. DiMaggio in '38 batted .324, with 32 home runs and 140 RBIs. Lou Gehrig, not evident in the offered photo hit .295, with 29 home runs and 114 RBIs, was in his last full seasons before the effects of ALS would limit him to eight games in 1939. On Oct. 3, 1938, the Bronx Bombers were two days prior to opening the '38 Series. DiMaggio (on the left of the flag ropes), the Hall of Fame center fielder, and Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy, on the right of DiMaggio, are tugging on the ropes of a huge flagpole at New York City's Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, in the Borough of Queens. The offered photo, on poster board, is for the formal occasion of dedicating the 1938's World Fair "Court of Sport". The New York World's Fair ran for two seasons: April 30, 1939, to Oct. 31, 1939, and then from May 11, 1940, to Oct. 27, 1940.

The 1939-40 New York World's Fair, in which 62 nations, 35 U.S. States and territories, and 1,400 organizations participated, drew slightly over 45 million people. The theme of the fair was "The World of Tomorrow" and included very early television broadcasts, including the first televised Major League baseball game, which included the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Machine printed on the photo: "JOE McCARTHY and "YANKEE" players Dedicate "Court of Sport"/NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR/OCT. 3, 1938". In the lower right corner of the photo, Christy Walsh, agent for Babe Ruth, used black fountain pen ink to inscribe and sign: "For Joe McCarthy= A loyal friend -/=With Sincere Thanks/= Christy Walsh". The signed photo comes with a PSA LOA for the Christy Walsh signature. The photograph exhibits some corner wear, and what appears to be a light negative smudge in the upper right, but it is in otherwise EXCELLENT condition.
