Casey Stengel played for five National League teams, and he was a good player, but he earned most of his recognition as a Hall of Fame manager, particularly of the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. An outfielder, Stengel was on the Brooklyn Dodgers/Superbas/Robins (1912-17), Pittsburgh Pirates (1918-19), Philadelphia Phillies (1920-24), New York Giants (1921-23), and Boston Braves (1924-25). He batted a lifetime .284. He managed the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves before he reached his greatest managerial success, with the Yankees. He won 10 Pennants and seven World Championships with the Bronx Bombers. He also managed the expansion New York Mets for the club's first four seasons. His personality and rapport with the press helped to make the Mets an extremely popular team, especially with New York City's former Giant and Dodger fans. Stengel was known as "the Ol' Professor," and he was noted for his humorous and often confusing statements, which came to be called "Stengelese." For example, when asked by reporters why the Mets picked journeyman catcher Hobie Landrith as the team's first pick in the expansion draft, Stengel answered, "If you don't have a catcher, you're going to have a lot of passed balls." The offering is an Official National League ball (Giles) dating 1963-1969. Using ink from a blue ballpoint pen, Stengel neatly wrote and inscribed the sweet spot with, "Best Wishes Casey Stengel." The signed baseball is in EXCELLENT condition, and it comes with a PSA LOA for the autograph.
