One of the Negro Leagues' true greats of the transitional era, Luke Easter was spotted by Bill Veeck, who purchased him from the Homestead Grays, and the first baseman went on to become a Most Valuable Player for the Cleveland Indians. Here's an unusual, eight-page fold-over contract with the Caguas Creoles, which is signed by Easter with his Cleveland address added. Most interestingly, it comes with a separate sheet signed by Easter revealing his tax status spelled out in detail as well as the promise of his wife's travel expenses being taken care of. Tragically, the trustworthy Easter was infamously murdered in 1979 carrying $35,000 worth of payroll checks.
