As documented in the Will Smith movie "Concussion," Mike Webster's multiple head injuries during his 16-year NFL career touched off shockwaves that are being felt today. Originally obtained directly from Webster, this cherry red Maxpro helmet was used in training and practice for the 1989-90 season, his last in the NFL. It shows nice use with scuffs and paint transfers, and while the Chiefs' arrowhead logos are not present, it appears as though one has been removed from the right side at least. It is beautifully signed, "Mike Webster H.O.F. 1997 Chiefs 1989-90" in 7.5/10 black Sharpie. An autopsy after Webster died of a heart attack at the young age of 50 showed the deleterious effects that the years of contact had on his brain, which has led directly to improvements including the current concussion protocols.
