These albumen print action photos of Harvard vs. Penn are the earliest action photos we have ever seen of the game of football, just a few years after the first intercollegiate game that included many of the now-familiar elements of “American Football” (kick-offs, punting, carrying the ball, touchdowns, field goal kicking and kicking goals after touchdown over a cross-bar) took place May 15, 1874, at the very spot of this game at Harvard and just a few years later. The first year of the Pennsylvania Pilgrims football program was 1881 which is the period of these photos. In one of the photographs, the scoreboard reads, "Harvard 0, Penn 0," and in the background are some of the Harvard University buildings. Photographs on heavy board measure 10x12" and are in Excellent condition overall with great resolution and clarity.
