This is a small panorama photo of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team featuring a 19 year old Paul Robeson. It is amazing how Paul Robeson has become synonymous with Rutgers University diversity beyond African American studies. There is a Paul Robeson Cultural Center, Library and Galleries, to name a few, on the various campuses of Rutgers. In late 1915, a very brave Robeson became one of the first few African-American students ever enrolled at Rutgers. It is sad to say that when he tried out for the football team, his nose was broken and shoulder dislocated by teammates, a showing of the extreme racism of the time. Ultimately he was victorious; his play at end won him first-team All-American selection in both his junior and senior year, he was considered the greatest end ever and became valedictorian. This is a stunning 3.25x8" photo on the back in sepia fountain pen is "Rutgers Football Team 1917." We have only ever seen three or four photos of Robeson during his Rutgers football career.
