Breaking from the starting gate, Secretariat is leading here in the 1973 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, but of course loses eventually in one of the greatest upsets in horse racing history. Future Hall of Fame jockey Jacinto Vasquez, who captained Onion across the finish line first, commissioned this work and two others in this sale (and they are coming directly from him). Signed on verso by Vasquez "Whitney Stakes Jacinto Vasquez," the piece measures overall 28x32" in a delightful panoramic format. By a talented British artist (Jacinto has since forgotten his/her name), but the artist has initialed it on the back "EFB."
