Winner of the 1980 Preakness Stakes, offered here is the saddle cloth Codex Santa wore in his victorious Santa Anita Derby that same year. This triumph began a string of three grade I victories in a row for Codex which culminated in the infamous Preakness Stakes win over the Derby winning filly Genuine Risk during a controversially rough trip while being ridden by Angel Cordero. He was trained by Wayne Lukas (for which that was his first Triple Crown win) and bred and owned by Tartan Farms in Florida. He was by Arts and Letters out of Roundup Rose by Minnesota Mac, later finished off the board in the Belmont Stakes, and was subsequently retired with a record of 15/6/2/1 and earnings of $535K.
