Walter Johnson, known as "The Big Train," and "Barney," was an Inaugural Hall of Fame right-hander who won an incredible 417 games, the second most in the history of the Major Leagues. Presented is a Walter Johnson cut signature. Johnson spent his entire 21-year Major League playing career, 1907-27, with the Washington Senators . He had a lifetime 417-279 record with a career ERA of 2.17. Judged from the perspective of today's baseball, Johnson's all-time record of 110 shut-outs seems unapproachable as does his standing as 4th overall in Major League complete games, at 531. Johnson was 6'0" (72") and yet had a wingspan of 78.5 inches, when the average person has a wingspan equal to his height. Thus, Johnson's long arms enabled him to throw the ball with a whip like motion, propelling it at such speeds towards home plate that Johnson was concerned that he could kill a batter with an errant pitch. Johnson's long right arm struck out 3,508 Major League hitters, an all-time MLB record until three pitchers broke it in 1983: Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, and Gaylord Perry.

Walter Johnson used his famous right arm to sign the offered cut signature, on paper or card stock, measured at 3x4.2". Johnson used black or dark blue ink to inscribe and sign "Best Wishes/Walter Johnson". The neat inscription and signature have faded over the years to a sepia color, and the originally white paper or cardstock has darkened to beige from the passage of time. The offering comes with the original envelope, measuring 3.3x5.4",postmarked Feb. 29, 1929, (Washington, D.C.) that was sent by Johnson The offering has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA CERTIFIED "AUTHENTIC SIGNATURE" (85620884).
