John T. "Chief" Meyers was a catcher in the National League from 1909-17 who had his peak seasons playing for Manager John McGraw's New York Giants. Offered is a unique and wonderfully charming, signed and inscribed Chief Meyers' index card, with a PSA MINT 9 autograph. Meyers was called "Chief", as were many other Native Americans, a common practice at the time. Meyers was a member of the Cahuilla tribe from the Santa Rosa area of Southern California. He attended Dartmouth for a time, and after playing in the minor leagues, he played with the New York Giants from 1909-15. He had successfully shaved several years off his official age when he signed with the Giants, and he was 29 years old when he was a rookie. He became a favorite of Hall of Fame, inaugural selection, pitcher Christy Mathewson, as they both played a cerebral game in attacking opposing hitters. Meyers' best season was in 1912, when he finished 3rd in the NL MVP race. That year he batted .358 and led the NL in OBP (.441). In the later part of his career, Meyers played for the Brooklyn Robins (1916-17) and the Boston Braves (1917). Meyers was immensely popular as a player, and he appears prominently in Lawrence Ritter's best-seller The Glory of their Times.
The offered, blank index card measures 3x5". Meyers displayed hit humor and friendliness as hand printed, in black ink, his name and inscription. Meyers wrote: San Bernardino, Cal./March-6-1956/CHIEF John T. Meyers/Erstwhile The New York "Giants" and Them 'Bums'. /Sorry just a bit late/'Chief' ". The card, after nearly seven decades, shows some slight darkening. The reverse side of the card is blank, and the card is hobby fresh and in EXCELLENT condition. The offering has been encapsulated and has a PSA/DNA auto grade of "Mint 9".
