Honus Wagner was one of the five Inaugural Inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and he is often considered to be the best all-time Major League shortstop in history. Displayed is a circa 1903 Pittsburgh Press vintage photograph of Wagner. Born Johannes Peter Wagner in 1874, Wagner lived most of his life in what is now called Carnegie, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh. Nicknamed "the Flying Dutchman" for his speed and German ancestry, Wagner was a 5-tool player who mostly played shortstop (1,887 games), also played 374 games in the outfield, 248 games at first base, 210 games at third base, 57 games at second base, and even appeared in two games as a pitcher. Wagner was 5'11", with very bowed legs, and a barrel chest.

Wagner batted a lifetime .328, with all but his first four years, with the Louisville Colonels (then a Major League club in the National League), with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner was an 8-time NL batting champ, with 3,420 hits. He had 723 career stolen bases, leading the NL in five seasons, and he was on the 1909 World Champions. In 1903, Wagner led the Pirates to the NL pennant, and Honus led the league in batting (.355) and triples (19). That season, the Pirates lost, 5-3 in games, in a best-of-nine World Series to the Boston Americans.

The oval photo measures 2.8x4", on cardboard and faux framed in cardboard to 4.5x5.8". Wagner, nattily dressed in a dress jacket and bow tie, is between two men, with the three men identified on back, in pencil by an unknown hand, as "Andrew Scheib, Hans Wagner, and Bob Holmes." Additional writing, also on back and in pencil by an unknown hand, in part reads, "1903/Return[?] Andrew C. Sweizer/808 Magee Bldg./Pittsburg[sic]." The back also has a stamped "THE PITTSBURGH PRESS." The photo has a tiny stain near the top, a few light scratches, and some wear/slight paper loss at the edges. Despite some minor imperfections, the vintage photo still depicts Wagner, at the time when he became mainly a full-time shortstop and with his career in his peak seasons.
