Displayed is a Babe Ruth store bought Hanna Batrite bat, similar to the Hanna Batrite bats that Ruth used, alongside his more commonly known Louisville Sluggers, during the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Hanna Manufacturing Company developed a "Steel Tempered" finish that caught the attention of Ruth and other top players, such as Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, as the finish helped prevent checking and cracking. While Hillerich and Bradsby eventually introduced a similar finish, Hanna bats were a notable part of Ruth's equipment during his peak seasons, and what peak seasons they were! From 1926-31, the Bambino won six straight AL home run titles and hit 302 round trippers, an AVERAGE of 50.4 home runs per season. Ruth in some seasons hit more home runs than a number of other AL teams - combined!
The offered store-bought bat is 36" long, and it weighs 31.75 ounces. In games, Ruth would swing a much heavier bat than this store-bought model that was made for an amateur player that would likely want a much lighter bat than the heavy "clubs," including heavier Hanna Batrite bats for Ruth himself. The bat label has an etched image of a bat, the kind with wings. Also etched on the label: "BURKE BATRITE/HANNA MFG. Co./ATHENS GA./MFG U.S. PAT. OFF." Etched on the barrel: "BATRITE SPECIAL/A RUTH 56 STEEL TEMPER." Four nails have been hammered into the barrel. The bat is cracked in a spot between the handle and the label. The bat has a slight chip on the knob. The barrel top shows "33" written in black marker by an unknown hand, and the knob bottom has an etched, "PATENTED JULY 15, 1930."
