Displayed is a 1971 Rick Barry 5th Annual ABA ALL-STAR Game award. The American Basketball Association (ABA) was a professional league from 1967-68 until the league merged with the NBA in 1976. Hall of Famer Barry was a 6'7" small forward who played professionally for 14 seasons: 10 in the NBA and four seasons in the ABA. In the NBA: San Francisco/Golden State Warriors (8 seasons), Houston Rockets (2 seasons) and in the ABA: New York Nets (2 seasons) & Oakland Oaks/Washington Caps (2 seasons). In 1996, Barry was named as one of the fifty greatest players in NBA history. He is the only player to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring for a season. Barry is the all-time ABA scoring leader in the regular season, at 30.5 PPG. His 36.3 PPG in the NBA Finals is the highest all-time. Barry used an old-fashioned underhand shot to shoot free throws, and his .880 free throw percentage was the best in ABA history. His .900 free throw percentage in the NBA was the highest in history when Barry retired in 1980. The 1972 ABA All-Star Game was held at Freedom Hall, Louisville, Kentucky, and Barry played as a New York Net. It was won by the East, at 142-113. In that game, Barry led both squads in rebounds with 12. Barry has five sons who have played professional basketball, three of them in the NBA.
