This bat is a 1934-43 era pre-model number Sam Chapman signature contract game bat that measures 36” in length and weighs 37.1 oz. It shows significant game use with swelled hitting surfaces, deeply embedded ball marks, bat rack marks, cleat marks and some dead wood on back of barrel. Number 6 is in black marker on the knob (he only wore this number in 1941 with the Athletics); Chapman played from 1938-54 almost entirely for the Philadelphia Athletics. A Navy flier from 1942-45, thus this bat dates to his last season in baseball before the war, a year he batted .322 with 25 home runs, a feat he never again accomplished after he returned from the war.
