Before the times of the players getting World Series rings, they were given other gifts for their efforts, either by the team or the league. Very often those gifts came in the form of pocket watches, so this marvelous specimen is the predecessor to the modern World Series ring. Dating from 1909, it was given to standout catcher George Gibson, noted for his defensive prowess during the Dead-ball Era. This stamped 18k gold watch is by Jules Jurgensen and is of super high quality and was presented by Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss, who is often credited with the creation of the modern World Series. On the back of the case are Gibson's initials "GCG," inside is engraved "To George Gibson in appreciation of faithful efforts from Barney Dreyfus Oct. 16th 1909." Led by the play of Honus Wagner, the Pirates captured the series over the Detroit Tigers, going the distance in the best-of-7. NRMT condition, an ornate and timeless timepiece with tremendous historical value.
