NOTE: The lot comes with the original The Sporting News tear sheet showing the final product.
Hall of Fame skipper Casey Stengel is the subject of this marvelous cartoon artwork by Karl Hubenthal that graced the front cover of The Sporting News in the fall of 1956. The "Ol' Perfessor" is singled out for guiding the Yankees to a sixth pennant in seven years under his watch. Behind the winking Stengel is a burly Bronx Bomber, carving out the notches signifying the team's championship seasons. Measures roughly 15" x 10.5".
These select pieces were saved by one of the original owners of The Sporting News Original Art Archives. Coming directly from The Sporting News, they were purchased at auction in the 1990s. These represent some of the better images by the finest artists including Willard Mullin, Karl Hubenthal, Leo O’Melia and the unsung hero, Lou Darvas.
