This is the only known copy in private hands. The coming of baseball in America, this is the first important baseball newspaper. Edited by Francis Richter, who played a key role in the early development of the game of baseball, it pre-dated its main competitor The Sporting News by three years. Henry Chadwick, the "Father of Baseball", was a regular contributor. The issue leads off with "Phills Win" headline. A brilliantly written story, it must have been busting out of Richter and fellows for years waiting to write this one: "Yesterday was a memorable day in baseball annals in this city, the occasion being the meeting of the Athletic and Philadelphia clubs this season. It originally came out of a bound volume from an important source which will be revealed to the buyer. Repaired spine otherwise very good.
