The second of two extremely rare 1888 G & B Chewing Gum cards, this one of Danny Richardson, graded GOOD 2 (MK) by PSA. Richardson was a major leaguer from 1884 to 1894, where he played second base for the National League New York Giants, Players' League New York Giants, Louisville Colonels, Washington Senators, and Brooklyn Grooms. Technically designated an E223, this card is in very fine condition, and one that (as can easily be seen) presents far better than its technical grade. The small size (1 x 2.25 inches) of G & B’s and the fact that they were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & B’s are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. This example of Hall of Famer Conner is the photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable in the eyes of most collectors (G & B’s were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). The front is particularly clean, and except for a miniscule chip at the top left corner, presents as an Excellent card. The reverse exhibits the number ‘2’ written neatly in pencil, but is otherwise clean and unmolested. A very impressive pasteboard from G & B Chewing Gum, one of collecting's rarest and most highly regarded nineteenth-century card issues – and the only one graded by PSA!
