Stunning 1910 inaugural game at Deadwood baseball park real photo postcard. Amazing view of the opening of Deadwood's baseball park with wonderful wild west and military crossover appeal. From the town made famous by David Milch's classic HBO show, the postcard immortalizes the strong baseball tradition of this region. Interestingly, the field is shown covered by the horses and wagons of the 4th US cavalry, 3rd squadron who are there to mark the festivities. It shows half the crew of 500 men, 25 officers, 600 horses, and 40 wagons encamped on the baseball field itself. Research from the Daily Deadwood Pioneer Times newspaper indicates there was a ball game on Saturday. (We are not sure where they are going to play!). The bottom of the postcard has "Camp Headquarters 4th cavalry 3rd squadron Deadwood baseball park Aug. 30 & 31 1910" written in period ink. Deadwood had a rich tradition in baseball originating in George Custer and his troops playing games there before the Battle of Little Big Horn. There also existed the Black Hills League and a barnstorming team led by Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel played there in 1922. Of course, Deadwood is most famous as the immortal wild west town where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered and where American folklore met real life with heroes Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, Seth Bullock and many more walking the streets. A true piece of American history!
