Joe Jackson from the 1917 World Series versus the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds, Oct. 11, 1917. "Shoeless Joe" hitting (en route to first base). Jackson grounded out, but this is the day the White Sox clinched the Series, winning four games to two. Jackson hit .304 in this Series, but was implicated at the end of the 1920 season for attending a 1919 meeting in which eight White Sox players were approached about throwing the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds, and Jackson was subsequently banned from baseball for life. Jackson was considered one of the best ballplayers in history and batted .356 lifetime. This photo is from when Jackson was known for his immense skill, not his gambling connection. Western Newspaper Union stamp on verso. Oversized Type I photo (10x14").
