Historically significant boxing program (7x9.5"). In 1914, Gunboat Smith won the "White Heavyweight Championship," a title created by promoters that was not widely recognized - because the real World Heavyweight Champion was Jack Johnson. Since Johnson was an African-American and unpopular, this bogus "White Heavyweight Title" was created. Then on July 16, 1914, Gunboat Smith faced the French Georges Carpentier to retain his, according to the program cover, "White Heavyweight Championship of the World." Carpentier won when Smith was disqualified in the 6th Round for striking Carpentier when he was down. The program shows age, especially on the cover, where there are two small partial tears, creasing, staining, and fading. The edges of the program exhibit scuffing. While the program does show some imperfections, the pages inside the program are in good condition and the program is intact. Overall condition is satisfactory. The program has its historical value in that it records the prejudicial holding of a so-called "White Heavyweight Championship."
