In 1876 Arthur Soden and J.B. Billings purchased controlling interest in the Boston Red Stockings. Later in 1877 it was announced that Soden was the Team President. One of his more notable accomplishments as President was being credited with inventing the reserve clause, which allowed the team to "reserve" a player for the following season.
