The St. Paul Colored Gophers were an independent African-American team formed in 1907, and a historic club that put significant pressure on the desegregation of baseball, making them a happy anomaly in baseball history. In this photo, seated in a chair is P.E. Reid. "Daddy Reid," the owner of the team. Seated on the ground at far right is outfielder Willis Jones, who played with the Colored Gophers from 1907-08. In 1909, the Colored Gophers defeated the Lelands Giants, known as the most powerful African-American team at that time. Throwback St. Paul Colored Gophers jerseys have been worn by the Minnesota Twins three times, including these exact ones, with "STPG" on cap.
