Great Homestead Grays broadside. Promotes a game on Friday, May 10th. Most likely the game was in the 1930s and the only Friday May 10 that decade was in 1935. The Grays were located just across the river from Pittsburgh and they sometimes played their home games in the 1930s in Altoona. Twelve alumni from the Homestead Grays are in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Most of these players played for numerous teams in the Negro Leagues, but spent some time, for some many years, with the Homestead club. Cool Papa Bell, OF; Ray Brown P; Oscar Charleston, OF; Martin Dihigo, P/INF/OF; Josh Gibson, C, the greatest home run hitter in the Negro Leagues' history, the "Black Babe Ruth"; Judy Johnson, #B; Buck Leonard, 1B, a renowned hitter; Cumberland Posey, Founder/Owner; Willie Wells, SS; Smokey Joe Williams, P; and Jud Wilson, 3B. Although the very small photos in the collage on the broadside are indistinct, it appears as if Buck Leonard and Josh Gibson are depicted. The Baltimore Elite Giants, the visiting team listed on the broadside, sent a number of players to the Majors once the "color line" was broken. These included Roy Campanella, Joe Black and Junior Gilliam. Measures 16.75x25.75". Broadside has a few minor stains around the edges. Otherwise, poster is in good condition.
