Nice remembrance of Mel Harder, Cleveland Indian right-hander who played his entire 20 year major league career with the Tribe. Contains B&W photo and bio up through 1932. Harder won 223 games and was a four-time All-Star. He didn't strike out many, but was adept at getting ground balls. Joe DiMaggio and Hank Greenberg have said he was one of the toughest pitchers for hitters to face. He was particularly tough against right-handed batters. A smart pitcher, he allowed few homers and was stingy with walks. After his career, he parlayed his pitching intelligence and became a pitching coach with the Indians, before most clubs even had an official pitching coach. He worked with many Indian great pitchers, including Feller, Score, Wynn, Lemon, and Garcia. His pitchers on the pennant-winning 1954 Indians had an ERA of 2.78, the lowest since the dead-ball era. He received the required 75% votes from the Veterans Committee for the Hall of Fame, but according to the rules at the time, since two other players had a higher percentage, he was not selected. Framed, measures 12x14". Excellent condition.
