Interesting duplicate of contract for
George Engel to serve as the business manager for Henry Greb, World
Light Heavyweight Champion. Dated Dec. 30, 1920, also includes an
advertisement for Engel and Greb. Both the duplicate contract
(unsigned) and ad are on backing, some creasing on each, with a few very
small tears on contract. Greb was the World Light Heavyweight Champion
from 1922-23, and the World Middleweight Champion from 1923-26. Boxing
historian Bert Sugar ranked Greb as the 5th greatest boxer of all-time,
and the International Boxing Research Organization rated Greb as the #1
Middleweight of all time and the #2 pound-for-pound boxer in history.
The most fascinating verbiage in the advertisement is Engel's offer that
Greb will fight anyone, from 165 pounds to heavyweight, as long as any
club, can give Greb a reasonable guarantee to convince us that the
club has some patronage." Thus, ad itself is a fine keepsake of a
remarkable open offer for Greb to fight all comers. Advertisement measures 8.5x11", and duplicate contract is 16.5x21.5".
