The stock certificate is 9x12", has a corporate seal. and is for 400 shares (at $1 each) in the Tommy Burns Gold Mining Company. Not signed by Tommy Burns, it sounds like a shady venture. Burns lost almost all his money in the stock market crash of 1929, and the gold mining had not made him wealthy. Burns was the first Canadian born Heavyweight Champion, and he proved to be quite fair-minded. He was the first heavyweight champion to give a black fighter a chance at the title. Burns lost to Jack Johnson, and Johnson said, " He gave a black man a chance. He was beaten, but game." Burns fought fighters of diverse ethnicity in a time when that was rare. He was the first heavyweight champ to fight a Jewish boxer when he fought Joseph Smith in Paris.
