Nice shot of the astounding long-shot victory of Count Turf taken at the first turn at Churchill Downs on the 77th. running of the Kentucky Derby. Count Turf had never won before this race, with his best results a pair of second place finishes. Count Turf was part of a five-horse field that went off at 15-1 odds, and then he lost a hind shoe in the race, but still managed to win by 4 lengths over Royal Mustang, and become the first third generation Derby winner, being the son of Count Fleet (1943), who was the son of Reigh Count (1928). Close scrutiny of the photo reveals a crowd containing many women, and the patrons of both sexes are dressed to the nines - after all, it is the Derby. Good Derby remembrance.
