One of the icons of America's initial space forays was Wally Schirra, one the original seven astronauts chosen for the country's Mercury Program. Presented is a Wally Schirra signed Paraguayan special issue stamp. Schirra graduated from the United States Naval Academy, and he served aboard ship in World War II, and as a Navy pilot in the Korean Conflict who flew 90 combat missions. He is the only astronaut to have been in space as a part of three space programs: Project Mercury, the Gemini Program, and the Apollo Program. Schirra was a part of the first rendezvous of spacecraft, in December of 1965. After he left the astronaut program, he was a co-anchor with Walter Cronkite for all seven of NASA's moon landings. He is a member of numerous halls of fame, including being inducted into the International Air and Space Hall of Fame. The offered signed stamp measures 1.2x1.5", and its backing measures 2.8x4.1". The stamp reads CORREO DEL PARAGUAY (Country of Paraguay)/COHETES Y SATELITES (Rockets and Satellites)/Aereo (Airmail)/Walter M. Schirra. The stamp depicts a smiling Schirra in his space helmet, and the stamp is in fine condition and its perforations are not detached from the backing. Schirra signed the stamp in blue ballpoint. The stamp and backing have been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
